I asked a good friend who is a CPA to explain for me how a first time home buyer actually goes about getting the tax credit after they have purchased a home. He did an excellent job explaining it below. We all know the credit is available however how do we go about getting it? Here is a summary of what he has to say.

1. A first-time home buyer is someone that hasn’t owned a principal residence in the three years prior to the purchase date. If married, both spouses must qualify.
